Motor insurance is one of the most important types of insurance you can get. As it's illegal to drive without it, not only is being on the road uninsured a danger to yourself and others, but it's against the law. Unfortunately, this isn't enough to deter some people, meaning you could be at risk should an accident ever occur.

According to the Motor Insurers' Bureau (MIB), one in 10 British drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 are not even aware that motor insurance is a legal requirement. That already puts a significant portion of drivers into the uninsured category, but when added to those who are simply choosing not to purchase this essential service in order to save some money, the percentage increases.

The MIB is also the body that you should turn to if you ever become the victim of such an accident. Many people are under the belief that if they are hit by an uninsured driver, there isn't much they can do - but there is. You can make a claim against that driver and claim compensation if your case is successful - even if they do not have an insurance policy to assist with this. The MIB, which is funded by all of Britain's motor insurance providers, is available to insured drivers and provides an effective service by which you can pursue a claim.

Once you submit a claim to the MIB, they will get back to you with details on how they are going to proceed with your case. Even if you have been the victim of a hit and run accident, where the other driver simply drove away instead of leaving their details, it is still possible to make a successful claim. One thing you must do in every case, however, is contact the police. If you do not contact the police within five days of the incident, the MIB will not take on your case. The same goes for if you do not make a claim for compensation within the following nine months of your accident - though normally people attempt to claim much sooner than this.

The MIB will do what it can to help you with your claim and, as it was set up to help people like you, will try hard to help you win compensation.

Sometimes, your current car insurance provider will pay out following an accident without you having to turn to the MIB, which can make the event far less stressful. This will depend on your policy - and is another option of several.
